Wes had given Amelie and Eve the tour of the central compound himself. Stepping across the boundary of his own patch of the mowed valley, he stopped in front of them and turned around. “I’ll show you two the other parts of the colony tomorrow. In the meantime, welcome home.”

They looked at each other and giggled behind their hands like teenagers. Whispering too low for him to make it out, neither one of them took their eyes off Wes.

“Something wrong?”

Eve, the shorter one with a higher voice and a tad more curves, took the lead. “Why haven’t we met the other two yet?”

“Holly’s getting your homecoming ready, and Jenna’s doing who-the-hell-knows what.” They’re supposed to have IQ’s over 150, but they act like airheads. “I think the four of you will get along fine.”

Amelie piped up before Wes could turn for the porch. “So, what about yourself? We don’t know a thing about you, other than your name and that you head our family now.”

“That brunette who swabbed your cheeks is my big sister.” Wes started for the door, with or without them. Even thinking of his argument with Ava pushed his blood pressure up. “The goofy fucker who looks kinda like me is my half-brother, Jareth.”

Between the sound of gravel crunching behind him, Wes heard Amelie’s next question. “And the blonde girl? She looks just like Ava, other than the hair color.”

“That’s our Director, Elena Jensen.”

“So is she be your sister too?”

Wes kept quiet until he had them in the shade of the gabled porch. “She’d be happy to hear that, considering she’s my mother.” And whether his half-brother was trying to get in his mom’s pants, or if it was the other way around, wasn’t putting him in a happier mood.

Eve snatched his arm before Wes could grab the door. “Hold up, she’s way too young.”

And you’re way too nosy. “I guess I inherited some good genes, huh?”

Amelie sounded meek as she asked the obvious. “And your father?”

“Dead for the past twenty years. He was one of GeneFactor’s donors, just like your fathers.”

Both of them shut up and looked at him with a mix of sympathy and pain. Amelie broke the silence. “Eve’s died when she was in high school, and I never met my father.”

Another log tossed on the fire of suspicion. “This is supposed to be a happy day for all of us.” He faked a smile and opened the door, waving them in. “Come on, let’s see what Holly’s been planning.”
